The redgum years TOUR, a live album & another tour!

Back in March 1983, Redgum recorded one of its most successful albums, live at Rose, Shamrock and Thistle in Rozelle, Sydney.

“Caught in the Act” became a benchmark for live albums and highlighted John Schumann as one of the best frontmen in the country.

It’s 2025. Sold-out performances of “The Redgum Years” across Australia have whipped up a fair bit of demand for a live record.

To be recorded over 2 nights in Melbourne in August, John and the boys are setting out on “The Corrugated Highway Tour” in October to feature the live album of the same name.

Updated lyrics reflect our comprehensively mad world and a few new/old Redgum favourites will be added to the set list. There’s superb musicianship and vocal harmonies. And John Schumann, the dry-humoured artist/intellectual with an acerbic tongue, an unerring popular touch and a campfire voice.

“Trump fans won’t like it, nor will the right-wing shock jocks, climate change deniers, Murdoch’s playmates … etc etc.”

Too bad.

Be part of another historic Redgum moment, as an iconic Australian musical catalogue is performed in a iconic and historic Camden venue.

REDGUM: PIONEERS OF AUSTRALIAN MUSIC & CULTURAL HISTORY

With John Schumann front and centre, the indisputable fact is that, the legendary Australian folk-rock band, Redgum, was the first band to sing about our country and tell our stories with our place names in our accent.

Through Redgum songs, Australians started to look for lyrics with important messages about social equality, justice and the need to care for country.

Redgum refused to go on Countdown before refusal became fashionable. Despite not playing the game, Australians flocked to Redgum concerts in their thousands and bought the records in the hundreds of thousands.

In March 1983, John Schumann changed Australia
forever with his Vietnam veterans’ anthem,
“I was only 19”.

THE REDGUM LEGACY LIVES ON IN “THE REDGUM YEARS”

Fast-forward to 2023, John Schumann, is contacted via Messenger and Facebook by fans from all over Australia. Many of these emails come from people who were kids when the iconic song was first released. As adults, they’ve come to understand the Australianness and the important messages about justice, fairness, compassion and the need to care for country.

“The Redgum Years” owes its existence to The Vagabond Crew who were able to persuade John to revisit the iconic Redgum catalogue, to play the songs and to tell the stories in a special tribute concert.

“The Redgum Years was, quite simply, a triumph: sold out within days, a lengthy waiting list and ending in a standing ovation.”

Amazing. I was mesmerised.

We had a great night. Love John Schumann’s stories!

The gig was bloody sensational.

Could have listened for another couple of hours.

Fantastic and brilliant. Wonderful gig – brilliant musicians performing at their best.

The Redgum Years. One of the best live shows I’ve ever seen. I mean, ever!

We laughed our heads off and we sang our hearts out.

WHAT THEy SAY about john schumann

“Some voices are like old friends – familiar at once, not broken by time or distance. John Schumann’s voice carries the wind in from the outback.

It has grains of red dust and yellow earth, it’s flecked with toil, hardship, humanity and love.

It’s as old as the land, with a gnarled weariness, like the weathered bark of a gum, tinged with the light of hope.

He sings of Australia, its past and present, its people.”

Journalist and poet – Warwick McFadyen

the vagabond crew – international class band with international class players.

The esteemed members of The Vagabond crew each bring a considerable amount of musical experience and credentials to the group.

Julian Ferraretto, violin and mandolin and Enrico Morena, drums and percussion, both hold doctorates from the Adelaide University Elder Conservatorium of Music.

Rohan Powell on guitar and vocals and Polly Politis on piano and vocals are Adelaide legends in their own right – widely acknowledged to be the best vocal section in the state.

Anthony Thyer on electric guitar, harmonica, slide and vocals and Jamie Harrison on bass complete the line-up.

“The Vagabond Crew is a world-class band. I’d line this band up against any band in Australia,” John Schumann said.

“More importantly, we’re all mates – obvious when we’re on stage.”
